Cultivating Clinician Competency in Gender Affirming Care: Combating Anti-Trans Systems, with Guest Speaker Lucie Fielding is a 6 CE event from 8:30-4:30 on Zoom on Friday, June 7, 2024. The conference will model how to provide individual, relational, and family therapy with trans and gender affirming communities.

Whether your work is individual, relational or family centered, all clinicians need to establish a level of competency in working with gender non-conforming/trans populations and have an understanding of the unique issues facing these populations. Combating Anti-Trans Systems will create a space for those that work directly or indirectly with folx of all genders to ask curious questions in a non-judgemental environment that supports clinicians at all levels of experience. We will explore together how to engage in larger political and social systems, address the politicism of this work while acknowledging our in-office limitations, identify ways in which what is legal is not always ethical.

We are thrilled to have Lucie Fielding, author of Trans Sex: Clinical Approaches to Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments, as our guest speaker. Participants will also be able to choose between six other 90 minute breakout sessions that explore individual, relational, and family therapy with trans and gender diverse populations.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be better able to:

     1) Participants will identify three psychotherapeutic strategies to address the unique challenges that trans and gender diverse peoples are facing in 2024.

     2) Participants will identify three relational strategies to support the relationships and family structures that involve trans and gender diverse peoples.

     3) Participants will identify three risks to address the unique challenges to trans individuals and their families.

     4) Participants will identify three protective factors to address the unique challenges to trans and gender diverse individuals and their family members (i.e. co-transition).

     5) Participants will identify three strategies for supporting trans and gender diverse peoples through the process of transitioning.

     6) Participants will leave with an understanding of how transitioning is an ongoing, developmental process, rather than a static event, not unique to trans and gender diverse peoples.

Lucie Fielding PhD, MA, LMHC (she/they; elle/iel) is a queer, non-binary trans femme therapist. In addition to Lucie’s work as a therapist she is also sexuality educator. She has facilitated workshops in numerous settings, including professional conferences, sex therapy education programs, and community-facing workshops. She is an adjunct professor in the Sex Therapy Certificate Program at Antioch University-Seattle and author of the book Trans Sex: Clinical Approaches to Trans Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments (Routledge, 2021).

Jeremy Darling is a Worcester based Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Certified Sex Therapist who works with adolescents (14+) and adult populations to address matters relating to gender, sexuality, trauma, relationships and loss. He specializes in creating spaces for those who are struggling with identity and personal direction in one’s life. Through a balance of Humanistic philosophy and Systemic awareness he strives to challenge the language and stigma that affects the LGBTQIA+ community and correct misconceptions of what it means for a minor to seek out gender/transitioning services.

Sage Phoenix is an expressive arts therapist, licensed mental health counselor, and clinical supervisor in Boston, MA. They received their master’s degree from Lesley University, where they have taught as an adjunct instructor. They have advanced training in EMDR, internal family systems (IFS), Phoenix Rising yoga therapy, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, and various somatic techniques. They specialize in PTSD and complex trauma, and working with young adults in the LGBTQ+ community. Since 2020, they have also served as an executive co-chair of IEATA, the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association. 

Annie Crossman (they/them) is an LMHC in Massachusetts who has been working in the LGBTQ+ community since 2012. Annie is currently employed as the clinical coordinator of the LGBTQ+ outpatient program Out at Home, a program of The Home for Little Wanderers. Annie is a queer clinician and specializes in gender affirming care, consulting for health care professionals/centers and community organizations to improve the experience of folx who identify as trans and/or gender expansive. Annie also specializes in eating disorder treatment and has worked as a clinician at residential, PHP/IOP, and outpatient levels of care. Annie is passionate about social justice advocacy regarding all aspects of social identity and works to be anti-racist in their practice

 Joy Lochelt (she/they/any) is a LICSW in Massachusetts who has over 14 years of experience in the Mental Health field. Joy is the Clinical Director of Out at Home, a LGBTQ+ outpatient program of The Home. Joy specializes in Narrative Therapy, has completed a Somatic Therapy Certificate, and is an EMDR trained therapist. Joy has passion for supporting the LGBTQ+ community because of her queer identity and experiences. Joy is passionate about supporting the BIPOC community and continuing to integrate anti-racist practice recommendations into their work. Joy is a White, European-American, English-speaking, person. Joy is a gamer-affirming, poly and kink affirming, sex worker positive and body-affirming therapist.

Dr. addyson tucker (they/them) is a genderqueer psychologist and ADHDer who thrives at the intersections of racial, gender, and body liberation. They love helping queer & trans adults build shame resilience through self-compassion and radical healing. Professionally, addyson’s mission is to guide trans-affirming providers to be more intentional, inclusive, and accountable for those impacted by systemic oppression and marginalization.

 Jordon Anderson (they/them) is a clinical social worker and certified sex therapist. They have a specific interest in working with LGBTQIA+ people around erotic embodiment. They practice through a variety of theoretical lenses including, psychodynamic, Bowianian, and Cognitive process therapy. Jordon is licensed in Massachusetts.

Jessica Price (she/her) is a clinical social worker and sex therapist, pre-certification. She is licensed in both Florida and Massachusetts. Jessica trained as a school adjustment counselor, certified as a school and community trauma worker, and trained in family mediation and parenting coordination. She has served as an expert witness in family court and works with disability advocacy within large and small systems. She works with all "ages and stages" of life. She is interested in exploring the stages of development throughout the life cycle, advocacy, disability, family systems and sexual development

 Miranda Croteau (she/her) is a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified sex therapist practicing in Salem, MA. She specializes in working with the queer, kink and polyamorous communities. Miranda uses attachment theory and narrative therapy in working with individuals and partners. She is also the Executive Director for the New England Association of Family and Systemic Therapy.

 Kristen Dew (she/they) is a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified sex therapist in Monroe, CT. She is a Clinical Fellow member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), an AAMFT Approved Clinical Supervisor, a Professional member of the American Association for Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), an AASECT Sex Therapy Supervisor in Training, and a member of the AAMFT Queer and Trans Advocacy Network. Kristen teaches at Sourthern Connecticut State University and Fairfield University in the Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Department.
