Applying Concepts from a Single Session Model to Short- and Longer-Term Work with Individuals, Couples and Families

Category: Consortium Events

In this workshop, participants will be immersed in the theory and practice of a transtheoretical single session therapy (SST) approach. The purpose of this training is to enhance helping professionals’ capacities to work efficiently in short- and longer-term work with a diverse range of clients and presenting problems. The inception of the single session therapy approach was an adaptation to provide immediate support to crisis and mental health needs in community settings. The model was designed to be readily accessible and affordable, minimizing access barriers. It was also developed to be accessible to clinicians who can apply the concepts of SST to their own orientation to their work. In our current milieu, with the need for counseling services extending far beyond capacities of the workforce, these strategies serve to decrease length of treatment, minimize the suffering of those we serve, allow us to serve more people in need and to feel effective in our efforts to help. Many of the dominant counseling practices situate the work as a longer-term therapeutic process. It is common for approaches to conceptualize therapy as an ongoing service, usually sought by people when their situation has become more complex, intense, and with sense of hopelessness to move forward. Single session therapy challenges the idea that individuals, couples, and families cannot benefit from one or several therapeutic conversations. We will understand how the single session approach is practiced for those who have very limited opportunities to meet with clients. For those of us who do longer term work, we will learn how to apply aspects of the model to support clients’ capacity to move forward in the direction they prefer in their lives with relative efficiency. We will discuss this approach using case examples, modeling how SST works with a range of clients, and critically examining how SST can enrich and improve participants’ preferred models of practice. Dr. Sesma will share the way she enacts the model, applying a social constructionist-oriented family systems approach with SST concepts. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the practices Monica shares to determine how they will bring the learning back to their work. They will consider:the advantages of attempting to work more efficiently with clients potential effects on outcomes and satisfaction in their work settings how including concepts and methods from an SST orientation could add to equity in practice delivery for a range of populationsThis workshop will include lecture, interactive exercises, discussion, and practice components.
