Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines the practice and clinical application of mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy to break the cycle of depression. Originally designed to prevent relapse in people who have recovered from an episode of major d epression, MBCT has been empirically validated through rigorous clinical re search and appears in numerous treatment guidelines for depression. MBCT ha s also been shown to be helpful for other mood disorders and anxiety. Based on the research of Drs. Zindel Segal, John Teasdale, and Mark Williams, an d documented in their book mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depressi on, this professional training is a foundational step in the MBCT Training Pathway and is equally applicable to therapists interested in incorporating elements of MBCT into their clinical work. Through role-playing and “teach backs”, participants are supervised as they guide each other through the e xperiential and didactic components of the MBCT curriculum. The training co mbines didactics, small group process, and experiential practice — including daily meditations, yoga, and periods of silence, to consolid ate the participants’ learning.Throughout this training, didactics, experie ntial practice, and small group process — including daily meditations, yoga , and periods of silence—are relied upon to consolidate the participants’ l earning of basic mindfulness group leading skills for clinical settings. A continuous theme emphasized in this training is the importance of the clini cian’s own meditation practice, especially how self-knowledge gained throug h practice can be used in helping clients in emotional distress. These rigo rous trainings are appropriate for professionals in the health care, commun ity health, education, mindfulness research, mindfulness intervention, and leadership fields.
