Behavioral Health in a Digital World: Ethical and Risk Management Challenges
Thursday, December 16, 2021, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM EDT
Category: CE Events: Adult Individuals

Today’s behavioral health professionals face a wide range of challenging ethical issues.  Some ethical issues — for example, the limitations of clients’ confidentiality rights, boundary issues in small and rural communities, minors’ right to consent to services, and allocating scarce resources — have concerned practitioners for most of the professions’ history.  Other contemporary ethical issues are novel and unprecedented, especially related to practitioners’ use of digital and other technology to serve clients remotely and professionals’ management of online communications.  Is it ethical for practitioners to use technology to provide services remotely to clients they never meet in person?  How should clinicians manage boundary issues associated with online communications with current and former clients?  How should practitioners respond to “friend” requests they receive from current and former clients on online social networking sites?  Is it ethical for clinicians to conduct online searches for information about clients without clients’ knowledge?  What are common pitfalls when using electronic health records?  What are the implications of the 21st Century Cures Act regarding clients’ remote access to clinical records?  In this webinar, Dr. Frederic Reamer will explore cutting-edge ethical issues in behavioral health related to the use of digital and other technology.  He will make extensive use of case examples.
