Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines the practice and clinical application of mindfulness meditation with the tools of cognitive therapy to break the cycle of depression. Originally designed to prevent relapse in people who have recovered from an episode of major depression, MBCT has been empirically validated through rigorous clinical research and appears in numerous treatment guidelines for depression. MBCT has also been shown to be helpful for other mood disorders and anxiety. Based on the research of Drs. Zindel Segal, John Teasdale, and Mark Williams, and documented in their book mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression, this professional training is a foundational step in the MBCT Training Pathway and is equally applicable to therapists interested in incorporating elements of MBCT into their clinical work. Through role-playing and “teach backs”, participants are supervised as they guide each other through the experiential and didactic components of the MBCT curriculum. The training combines didactics, small group process, and experiential practice  including daily meditations, yoga, and periods of silence, to consolidate the participants’ learning.Throughout this training, didactics, experiential practice, and small group process — including daily meditations, yoga, and periods of silence—are relied upon to consolidate the participants’ learning of basic mindfulness group leading skills for clinical settings. A continuous theme emphasized in this training is the importance of the clinician’s own meditation practice, especially how self-knowledge gained through practice can be used in helping clients in emotional distress. These rigorous trainings are appropriate for professionals in the health care, community health, education, mindfulness research, mindfulness intervention, and leadership fields.
