Sex, Sexuality, and Gender: Children and Adolescents
Friday, September 24, 2021, 8:00 AM to Friday, October 22, 2021, 5:00 PM EDT
Category: CE Events: Children

This mini-series will explore the current scientific and theoretical understanding of sexuality and gender as well as the clinical importance of these aspects of identity in the treatment of children and adolescents. These core characteristics of development are being addressed more directly in the mainstream media, social media, and within the younger generation. As a result, youth increasingly present with questions and concerns around gender and sexuality. In addition, the meaning of common terms such as sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual identity have changed rapidly in recent years. Finally, children and adolescents have almost universal access to the internet, facilitating interest in cybersex, sexting, and pornography. Clinicians need to be equipped with strategies to effectively address the many and diverse questions from their young patients, and understand how the shift in language impacts their practice and work with youth. Enhancing communication and understanding for parents, families and clinicians is critical in order to keep pace with the rapid cultural shift and create an environment in therapy to help young patients speak to their experiences and concerns. The online series format includes didactic lectures, case presentations, and plenty of Q&A discussion. Mental health clinicians, pediatricians, family practitioners, internists, and others will learn practical strategies to immediately apply in their practice setting.
