Internal Family Systems (IFS) Level 1 TrainingInternal Family Systems is at the forefront of a movement toward a more collaborative therapeutic approach that relies on clients’ intuitive wisdom. IFS offers a clear, non-pathologizing, and empowering view of human cognitive and emotional life and provides a dynamic therapeutic approach that allows both therapist and client to enter into a transformational relationship in which healing can occur. This course will review the clinical concepts of IFS therapy, including: 1. psychic multiplicity as the norm; 2. how psychological trauma encourages extreme defenses in protective sub personalities; 3. 2 categories of sub personalities that are most often relevant in therapy: protective sub personalities and exiled sub personalities; 4. the positive intent of key defensive strategies that are used by protective sub personalities; 5. the seat of consciousness called the Self in IFS; 6. the 2 methods of communicating with parts: in-sight and direct access. This course will review the clinical goals of IFS therapy, including: 1. unblending, or the mindful differentiation of sub personalities from the Self as a means to speak for, rather than from, protective sub personalities; 2. witnessing the traumatic experiences of vulnerable sub personalities; 3. unburdening vulnerable sub personalities; 4. helping protective sub personalities to find new rolesThe training includes lecture, discussion, demonstration, videoreview, experiential exercise, and small group practice. This training comprises 4, 3-day sessions (18 hours per session), plus four 2-hour small practice groups on an evening from September through December (8 hours), and 2 evening two-hour large group sessions with Dick Schwartz to discuss videos of some of his recorded interviews (4 hours). In total there will be 84 program hours.
