Bridging and Bonding: Exploring Race in Clinical, Community, and Organizational Practice
Monday, August 16, 2021, 8:00 AM to Friday, August 20, 2021, 5:00 PM EDT
Category: CE Events: Adult Individuals

There is wide consensus that racial categories, used in everyday common practice, are socially constructed and pseudo-biological terms. Yet, racial identity or the psychological connection we have with our race is integrated, consciously or unconsciously, into everything that we do and how we express ourselves in the world. As clinicians, community and organizational leaders practicing in racially charged times, we often serve as a bridge between belonging and otherness. Working with people from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, we are often challenged to manage the impact of society’s racial tensions and its pervasive influence in our multiracial society. Helping others achieve healthy racial identity resolution and understand themselves as racial beings requires that we manage our own unconscious biases and practice radical respect. Using a relational framework that offers a contemporary approach for managing differences, this workshop will explore race as a critical aspect of self, yet only one aspect of our multiple and intersecting identities. We will examine the various racial identity statuses and how they are manifested in our everyday lives. We will also explore how we can use ourselves as tools for behavioral change with clients and how to leverage social privilege on behalf of others in an organization and the greater community.
