Couples interactions consist of two types of communication: direct—the words being spoken, and analog—the subtext that one connects to the direct communication. These types of communication are fueled by expectations—expected outcomes of partner response, expected shared interests and values, expected personal and partner roles. While we create our expectations from various sources, including gender and other social norms, this workshop evaluates the ways that couples utilize observations about the relationships, values, and process of their families of origin to create expectations for their own relationship. This workshop will explore how the ways that anxiety gets projected onto a person by their family of origin during conflict impacts communication in their current relationship. Participants will also explore how principles of differentiation, including setting boundaries with families of origin, utilizing “I” statements, and managing anxiety in the presence of partner individuality, can create effective communication.
