First Friday Training: Anatomy of a Family: Reflections on Structural Therapy
Friday, July 12, 2019, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM EDT
Category: Consortium Events
Presented by Jeremiah Gibson
Family therapy brings a unique kind of stress to therapists; between competing needs and presentations of individuals to the seeming emotional chaos of family dynamics, it’s often hard to know where to begin and avoid feeling overwhelmed. This 3-hour workshop explores the work of Salvador Minuchin and his utilization of structural family therapy as a way of assessing and adapting the ways that families organize so that families and its individual members have the capacity to change and differentiate. Participants will learn how to identify and reframe maladaptive behavioral patterns, including coalitions, triangles, and enmeshed/highly diffuse boundaries. Participants will also learn how to use structural principles to catalyze family change, including the establishment of boundaries between various subsystems, cohesiveness from clear family roles and process, and adaptability to developmental change.
